Retro London
Lucinda Gosling
Take a walk back in time with this rich collection of amazingly evocative photographs of one of the great cities in the world.
From busy thoroughfares like Oxford Street to cramped and colourful Brick Lane, all manner of streetlife is on display — shoppers, tramps, street hawkers, children playing, bobbies, markets — the whole panoply of London life as it was.
Retro London uses the extraordinary archive of the Mary Evans Photo Library to depict the devlopment of the city and the life of its people from the start of the 20th Century to the Swinging Sixties.
With chapters on Transport, London at war, social events, London by night, Sport and recreation and many more,
it is beautifully presented in a padded hardcover format with over 300 unique images.
Lucinda Gosling is a historian and Chief archivist for the Mary Evans Picture Library. She studied history at the University of Liverpool and has contributed articles on illustration, royal history and the First World War to various publications and is author of Brushes and Bayonets, a survey of Great War cartoons from the Illustrated London News archive.
